Stretch marks are long, narrow streaks that develop on the skin. When the skin is stretched over a short period of time and they are pretty common.
Who Can Develop Stretch Marks?
Anyone can develop stretch marks, although they tend to affect more women than men. Over 50 percent of women experience stretch marks during pregnancy. Stretch marks occur on a range of body parts. They pop up on the stomach, outer thighs and hips. You might also see them on the breasts, upper arms, and lower back.
What Causes Stretch Marks?
Along with pregnancy, this type of scarring is often seen after a period of intense skin growth due to weight gain or weight loss, when the skin is not able to resume its normal form. Sometimes stretch marks are silvery and other times dark. They vary among individuals. Stretch marks do not pose any serious long-term health risks.
Before stretch marks are visible, your skin can appear thin and pinkish. Because of the stretching, it may also feel irritated or itchy.
Wrinkly, raised streaks emerge. Depending on your skin color, they can be red, purple, pink, reddish-brown or dark brown. The streaks eventually fade and flatten. Over time, stretch marks may become less noticeable, but this can take years.
Can Stretch Marks Be Prevented?
Stretch marks can be genetic, which is why some people get them and others don’t. But there are a few things you can do to avoid these unsightly streaks:
1) Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins A and C. This can help support the health of your skin. The minerals zinc and silicon are also helpful.
2) Work toward gradual weight gain during pregnancy.
3) Stay hydrated. Drink six to eight glasses of water every day.
